Do you have an interest in how this College is run?

There are various ways to get involved with College and use your voice to make positive steps for the College to change and move with the times:

Student Governors

The Student Governors attend Governors meetings to provide student perspective and they also attend some College events. There are five meetings of the Governing Body (at least one each term). Governors will also attend the Standards Committee which will meet four times per year and scrutinises the quality of College provision including FE and HE courses. Both meetings will be held on Wednesday afternoons.

The Corporation is the highest decision making body in the College. When a Student Governor vacancy arises the position is advertised across the College and application forms are made available at reception. You can read more about our Governors here. The College currently has three student governors including one which represents higher education at the College. Student governors receive mentoring support and their achievements are recognised through personalised references.

Student Representatives

Each course* will elect 2 Reps to come to the Student Representative Group meetings to discuss how their experience at the College has been so far and to highlight positives and potential improvements that could be made to their course or the College.

There are 4 meetings a year and your student rep will be given an agenda beforehand so that you can collect everyone’s thoughts and ideas. When you attend student representative meetings, you will receive a free luncheon voucher.

In addition, student reps are invited to course team meetings throughout the academic year. Reps may also be invited to participate in focus groups.

There are currently two Lead Student Representatives for HE provision at the College who contribute to steering groups and are members of the College's HE Quality Improvement Group.

Student Council

This is a fantastic opportunity to enhance your CV and gain new skills.

At the end of the year you will receive a reference to show a potential employer how you have contributed to College life.

Do you have an interest in how this College is run? Would you like to be a part of the decision making process? Have you had any ideas about how the College could be improved...if so, this is the group for you. By being part of the Student Council you can be involved in:

  • Organising College based projects that are created, developed and ran by students
  • Have your say in College focus groups including tendering processes
  • Working with College Management on decision making and improving the College
  • You may also be invited to represent the College in College committees or external events

Student Surveys

The College performs internal surveys twice a year and the results of these surveys are discussed during rep meetings and are used to inform the development of course programmes. These surveys can be accessed via the VLE (Moodle). Students on HE programmes undertake separate surveys to other College students and may be asked to participate in the National Student Survey the results of which are used to inform potential students about the College.

Comments, Compliments and Complaints

The College want to hear your thoughts and has provided a range of ways in which you can do this. However, if you would like to make a compliment or formal complaint this can also be done by completing a ‘Comments, Compliments and Complaints’ form. These can be found on Reception and in Student Guidance at the College. Comments will be passed on to the appropriate department. If your compliment names a member of staff it will go to their Head of Department and the Personnel Department. The College aims to provide outstanding education and training to students and employers. However, if you believe we could improve our service further or should you wish to make a complaint then we are always happy to address your comments and concerns. NUS (National Union of Students)

Southport College is affiliated to the NUS and students at the College aged 16 or over are eligible for NUS membership. You can apply for your card here. The NUS extra card provides you with discounts at a number of high streets and online retailers.
