Level 5

This course provides an opportunity to develop the intellectual, creative and technical skills required to be a successful contemporary practitioner in the Graphic Design industry. Students will be provided training in the essential skills of visual communication including graphic design, illustration, print, typography, lens based media, time based media and computer aided graphic design. Through this integrated approach students will be provided a foundation in the skills required for a range of careers in graphic design and related fields.

At least 2 A Levels or BTEC National Certificate/Diploma or International Baccalaureate or Access to Higher Education Diploma Foundation Diploma Level 3 NVQ. A portfolio of work. Successful interview and appropriate references.

All applicants are expected to have GCSE Grade 4 in Maths and English or hold equivalent certificates such as Numeracy Level 2, Literacy Level 2, Functional Skills English, Functional Skills Maths or Key Skills. We also accept other relevant qualifications or work/industry experience. Work/Industry experience must show knowledge of and commitment to the course. You will need to demonstrate an ability to study at a Higher Education level.

Successful completion of the course could lead to:

  • Employment in graphic design, advertising, publishing, marketing and illustration
  • Self-employment – several students have started successful businesses since beginning their HND studies
  • The opportunity to progress to degree level study in graphic design at external organisations which offer top up courses for HND programmes

The course is unit based and consists of coursework which includes projects, including live briefs, and written assignments. A variety of assessment methods will be employed including sketchbooks, case studies, reports, time constrained assessments, essays and presentations. The assessment of BTEC Higher National qualifications is criterion-referenced and the College is required to assess learners’ evidence against published learning outcomes and assessment criteria for each unit. A Pearson-appointed External Examiner confirms that our internal assessment is to national standards.

Qualification: BTEC Level 5 HND Diploma in Graphic Design (QCF) or BTEC Level 4 HNC Diploma in Graphic Design (QCF)
