The event, which was the first of its kind in the area, saw 60 year 9 children entering and competing in challenges right across the curriculum, including Engineering, Construction, Travel & Tourism, Professional Cookery and Photography & Media, as well as more general team challenges too.
The theme for the day was sustainability and the competitors rose beautifully to the challenge, wowing our college judges with their ideas, professionalism and real passion for their subjects.
Winners received a medal, voucher and a book relating to their specific challenge and the school that won the team challenge (Stanley High School this year) also went home with a large silver trophy.
The Skills Challenge, which gave the pupils a chance to work with our tutors and experience our fantastic facilities for the first time was such a success that it is now set to be an annual event and many of the schools have already said they can’t wait to take part next year too!
College Principal Michelle Brabner presented the winners prizes at the end of the day and thanked all the staff involved for their huge efforts in putting such a great event together. Michelle said “It was a superb day and I would like to thank all our staff involved, as well as our high school colleagues for taking the time to bring their pupils along. Praise also goes to the pupils of the partner high schools themselves, for their brilliant participation. They were a real credit to their schools Events like these are a wonderful learning experience for the pupils and really open up our college to the whole community. We look forward to hosting lots more!”
The high schools competing this time were Greenbank, Birkdale, Christ the King, Stanley, St Bedes and Savio Salesian College.
