I chose to go to Southport College University Centre as its local and it had the course that I wanted to do. It was daunting at first, especially as a single parent, but I've had a lot of guidance, support and encouragement. The Art Foundation course gives you a chance to be creative in your own style and it’s been really fun. The course has given me the confidence to take the next step, a degree in Fine Art at LJMU.

The teaching staff on the programme are very passionate about their subject and they too have been very warm and welcoming. My advice to anyone considering the course is to make sure that this is something you really want to do, as it is a full degree programme so is just as demanding as going to a larger university but the group sessions with smaller class sizes really allow you to have confidence in your abilities, through regular feedback from peers and teaching staff.

Emma Shelton, Access to Social Science

I’d always planned to go back to education when my youngest child was secondary school age. The Access to Social Science course has given me the skills and confidence I needed to go to university. The teaching staff have been excellent, there’s a lovely atmosphere and I’ve had lots of support.

The staff have been an absolute inspiration. Juggling degree level study with full-time work and home commitments is not easy but those moments where I felt like giving up were quickly overcome as the tutors were always available to provide advice, empathy and support.

I moved to Southport from Scotland to begin the Foundation Degree in Computing and IT. This was a big change but a great move for me, as I have found all of the staff at the college to be absolutely wonderful. They are all highly skilled in their subject area and present the course information in a wonderful manner. My personal experience has taught me that the staff are always willing to help with any issue and I have had such a wonderful time so far.

If you are serious about entering the industry and ready to put in the work required to succeed, I would highly recommend the HND Games Design programme, as it provides all of the skills you need and offers the chance to work on a wide range of technologies. The course is also ideally suited to anyone who needs to or wishes to work part-time whilst studying, as the condensed timetable and focus on independent learning means that I am only in college two days a week.

Library and Study Centres

LSC1 is the library facility used by University Centre students and as well as having books and other learning resources, students are also able to borrow a laptop or use a quiet study area.
