Course Overview
The UAL Level 4 Foundation Diploma in Art & Design is an intensive and highly creative course designed for students progressing towards university study or careers within the creative industries. The course provides the opportunity to explore, experiment, and refine specialist creative practice while developing independent thinking, technical confidence, and professional working methods.
Students investigate a wide range of creative disciplines including fine art, graphic design, illustration, printmaking, textiles, photography, sculpture, digital media, and mixed media before developing a specialist direction through increasingly self-directed projects.
The course encourages students to explore contemporary creative practice, develop critical and contextual understanding, and build a professional portfolio suitable for progression into higher education and creative careers. Students work through workshops, live briefs, exhibitions, presentations, and self-initiated projects within a supportive studio environment.
The Foundation Diploma is widely recognised as one of the best preparation routes for progression into Art & Design degree courses and creative industry pathways.
Entry Requirements
Level 3 qualification in Art & Design or a related creative subject and GCSE English and maths at grade 4, alongside a portfolio of creative work and successful interview. Mature students with relevant experience and a strong portfolio may also be considered.

Exam and Assessment
The course is awarded by UAL Awarding Body. Assessment is project-based and completed through practical coursework, sketchbooks, reflective journals, digital portfolios, presentations, exhibitions, critiques, and self-directed project work. The course is structured across three stages: · Diagnostic investigation and creative exploration · Developing specialist practice · Consolidating practice through a self-directed final major project Students are encouraged to work increasingly independently, developing professional creative practice, critical thinking, research skills, and sophisticated practical outcomes. Projects are internally assessed and externally moderated by UAL Awarding Body.
