Childcare & Early Years

Children are an integral part of our country’s future so it is imperative that the care offered for them is of a very high standard. This means that only those qualified and with experience working with children will be successful in gaining a career in the industry.

The Childcare Sector

A career in childcare requires careful planning and preparation and a wide skill set including communication, problemsolving skills and the ability to work with others

Our Courses

Many of our childcare students move straight into employment in the childcare industry in local nurseries and early years settings. Some choose to use the experience they’ve gained to work overseas securing employment as au pairs, nannies and childcare agency staff. Other students progress on to higher education studying degrees such as Early Years, Education Studies and Children, Young People and their Services.

Ellis Dales, Diploma in Early Years and Care: The Early Years Educator Level 3
Ellis Dales, Diploma in Early Years and Care Level 3

After looking at other colleges, I chose to come to Southport College as the facilities including a working nursery are excellent. The staff are really supportive and friendly too. The Early Years Educator course is great. The placement weeks have been amazing; I went to Churchtown Primary school and YMCA nursery, and learning from staff on the job has been priceless. We also have the opportunity to work with children from local nurseries as they come into College once a week. I wouldn’t have been able to get these real life working experiences doing A Levels! The course at Southport College has given me everything I need to progress onto my chosen career path. Next year I am going to Edgehill University to study Primary Teaching.

The course at Southport College is great. We have our own nursery allowing us to learn in a real working environment. We also go out on placement two days a week. I have most enjoyed placement as I have been able to put my theory into practice. My time at Southport College has not only given me the theoretical experience but also the practical too which has helped me to confirm my career choice. I want to be a Primary school teacher in the future and will be studying Primary Education at Edgehill University next year.
